How much energy and water is needed to produce a Dopper Original bottle?

Energy

The Dopper Original is produced using the injection moulding technique. Our supplier uses electricity to power the machines. In the reporting year 2020 this was 199,92 MWh. About half of the energy is generated on-site with solar panels, the other part is purchased as green energy. This means that the so-called Scope 2 emissions of the factory are 0!

The factory uses natural gas to heat the facility (these are called the Scope 1 emissions). As a result, the factory emitted 0,17 tCO2e that can be attributed to the production of the Dopper Original.

The raw materials and the distribution of products also require energy. The related greenhouse gasses are called the embodied emissions. In the reporting year 2020, the embodied emissions for the Dopper Original are 0,32 kg CO2e per bottle from Cradle to Grave. Meaning from the extraction of the raw materials to the collection and sorting of a discarded product.

Water

No water is consumed in the actual fabrication process. There's water in the cooling channels to keep the temperature of the moulds under control, but it's pumped around in a closed loop. That means water coming from the machine is used to heat up the facility and directed back to the machine again. Creating a full circle.

We do need some water for service and maintenance. Plus, people need a toilet break every once in a while as well. So, here’s how much is used:

The whole factory takes in 1544 m3 of water per year from the municipal supply for personal use (toilets and showers), cleaning, and the maintenance of the cooling channels.
790 m3 evaporates and 754 m3 is discharged as clean water to the drain.
The production takes place in a low-water stress zone, so the water use does not impact the local environment.

The Dopper Original isn’t the only product made in the factory. If we project the water use for service, maintenance and cooling to the Dopper Original bottle production only, it would account for 213 m3 of water per year. This is roughly the same as a Dutch 4-person household.
